EcoVadis ratings: a practical guide for UK SMEs asked to get scored

More UK buyers are requiring EcoVadis ratings from their suppliers. Here is what the assessment covers, how long it takes, and how to prepare without spending months on it.

EcoVadis is the world's largest provider of business sustainability ratings. If a large company uses EcoVadis to assess its supply chain, it will ask its suppliers to complete an EcoVadis questionnaire and share the resulting scorecard. For many UK SMEs, receiving an EcoVadis invitation from a customer is their first formal encounter with ESG compliance.

What does EcoVadis assess?

EcoVadis scores businesses across four themes:

  • Environment — energy use, emissions, water, biodiversity, and environmental management systems
  • Labour & Human Rights — working conditions, health and safety, child and forced labour
  • Ethics — anti-corruption, anti-bribery, whistleblowing mechanisms
  • Sustainable Procurement — how you manage ESG in your own supply chain

How long does it take?

The questionnaire typically takes 3–5 hours to complete for a business doing it for the first time. The main time investment is gathering supporting documents — policies, certifications, and evidence of practices. EcoVadis reviews the submission and issues a scorecard within 4–6 weeks.

What score do you need?

EcoVadis scores range from 0 to 100. Most buyers set a minimum threshold of 45 (the "Committed" level) or 65 (the "Advanced" level). If you score below your buyer's threshold, you will typically be given a corrective action plan and asked to re-assess within 12 months.

How ESGSimple helps

ESGSimple includes an EcoVadis Readiness module that maps your existing compliance data to the four EcoVadis themes and identifies gaps before you submit. This means you go into the assessment knowing your likely score and what to address first.
